WASHING INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR TOKLAT SHEEPSKIN SADDLE PAD

If you have purchased a sheepskin saddle pad, following the recommendations below will extend its life. A real sheepskin pad includes the actual skin, which is infused with lanolin (a natural oil found in sheep’s wool). Preserving the lanolin in your pad is important in order to keep the skin supple. If you use strong detergents or high temperatures, the lanolin may be washed out of the skin, which will cause it to become hard and stiff, and to shed its fleece. Conversely, a pad which is properly cared for may last for many years.

DAILY CARE:

Daily care for your sheepskin after each ride will reduce the need to wash the pad frequently.

  • Use a stiff brush to remove dirt and fluff up moist fibers.

  • If pads are damp, remove from the saddle and hang to dry in a location out of direct sunlight and away from artificial heat sources. If the pads are saturated, then they MUST be hung from the short end, so that they do shorten in length.

  • Heat sources such as sunlight or radiators might dry out and stiffen the leather backing and cause shrinkage.

  • Please DO NOT wash sheepskin pads during your two week test ride.

  • Only wash sheepskin pads that you have purchased and note: we are not liable for any damage caused during laundering of the pads.

MACHINE WASHING A SHEEPSKIN PAD:

DO NOT use a machine that has a center agitator.

NOTE: DO NOT use a machine that has a center agitator. This will stretch and damage the sheepskin on your saddle pad, and also may catch and rip the piping on the pad (if any).

If you routinely use laundry detergents containing enzymes or bleach, we advise setting the machine to perform a rinse cycle prior to washing your sheepskin saddle pad.

Use a front load washing machine.

Be sure to select a mild washing product that is designed for sheepskin, we suggest using Mattes Liquid MELP.

Set the machine to cool water, gentle/delicate and low spin cycle.

Once the wash cycle is complete, stretch and reshape as needed.

HOW TO DRY:

Hang dry from the short end

Hang to air dry by hanging from the short end, away from sunlight or any forms of heat sources. Hanging from the short end allows the pad to retain its shape and continue to fit over the panels.

Once dry, separate and fluff fibers by lightly brushing with a wool brush or metal pet brush.
